THE MARK OF THE ROPE
"All right," she told herself. "Now you know. Someone tried to kill you and did not succeed because there is a phantom dog somewhere about."
Well before Avon had the ingenious idea for a "Satanic Gothic" imprint—all of whose titles are now rare and highly sought-after—Miriam Lynch (aka Claire Vincent / Mary Wallace / Moira Lord / Rosamund Hunt / Sylvia Lloyd) had made the occult and the supernatural her special subject: from 1969's GARDEN OF SATAN to 1971's THE WITCHES OF WINDLAKE to the cascade of titles from the '70s, a decade in which the occultist-tinged gothic came into fullest flower: from THE MARK OF THE ROPE on to THE WITCHES SONG in the same year, to DEVIL'S MIRROR, WITCHES' HOLIDAY, THE BRIDES OF LUCIFER, and scores of others. Lynch began publishing crime fiction and nurse novels in the late '50s, with her work evolving easily into the gothic mode so popular in the years that followed. Unlike many of her peers, Lynch never moved fully into the historical romance space as the market for the paperback gothic dwindled into the dawn of the '80s. Though she published a few half-hearted regencies (REGENCY ROSE, REGENCY BALL) towards the end of her career, a cursory glance at her full bibliography leaves no doubt that her literary heart—as "Miriam Lynch," at least—belonged to the Devil.
