The first collaboration of Greenwood and Griset. Described as having "an unpleasant sense of humour" and "almost every mid-Victorian prejudice" (Lambourne, 42), James Greenwood wrote THE HATCHET THROWERS with a degree of racism that even contemporary reviewers noted: "we are not disposed to consider the relations of the black and white races as a joke," wrote one in THE ATHENAEUM (844). In response, Ernest Griset drew an unflattering caricature of the anonymous reviewer, depicting him surrounded by newspapers and literature supporting Black causes. Recommended for scholarly use only.
