"All hope of publication in the English-speaking countries, at least for a long time to come, was gone. And here in my little bookshop sat James Joyce, sighing deeply." – Sylvia Beach
ULYSSES first saw print in the modernist literary magazine THE LITTLE REVIEW, edited by Margaret Anderson and Jane Heap. Midway through their serialization, issues of the magazine were seized and the editors were brought to trial in the fall of 1920. When they were convicted, ULYSSES was abandoned, only about half of it published. This disaster led to the now iconic publication of the book by Sylvia Beach at Shakespeare & Company, of which this copy is a ninth printing.
Paris: Shakespeare and Company, 1927. 8'' x 6.25''. Later blue cloth boards. 736 pages. Leaves with a touch of toning, light edgewear. Firm.
