RED DIRT MARIJUANA exemplifies the kind of work which first made Southern a cult figure, and then kept him one. Still well known to those who know him well, Southern was at one time capable of eliciting towering praise from the likes of Lenny Bruce, Nelson Algren, and the unfortunate Gore Vidal, cursed to share back-jacket blurb space here with Norman Mailer for all eternity. The recipients of this copy were the Grammy-winning producers behind 1962's wildly successful JFK-impersonation comedy album "The First Family," memorialized in Southern's inscription as "fun guys (in a way)." The pair also included Southern in their 1968 collection of short screenplays, PARDON ME, SIR, BUT IS MY EYE HURTING YOUR ELBOW? A nice association.
