First approached by the Dominicans of the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Home to write the life story of Mary Ann Long as a novel, a proposal she emphatically rejected, O'Connor encouraged the nuns to write it themselves and sent the manuscript produced by Sister Evangelist on to her publisher with such faint praise as she could muster ("She don't write like Shakespeare but she does well enough for this.") Her introduction, more tactful than her private letters, dwells on Nathaniel Hawthorne and on charity, and persuaded Robert Giroux to publish it: "I read your preface at once; it's marvelous. Then I read the story, with a few misgivings which somehow are not important."
