An engagingly thorough collection with selections based on each poet's "essentially characteristic" works. The earliest poem comes from Lady Elizabeth Carew (fl. ca. 1590), followed by Margaret, Duchess of Newcastle; Katherine Philips; and Aphra Behn; eighteenth-century poets include Hester Piozzi (her heavily anthologized "The Three Warnings"); Hannah More's abolitionist poetry; Anna Seward; and pioneering Romantic poet Charlotte Smith. The nineteenth century is naturally best represented, with Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Felicia Hemans, Emily Brontë, Christina Rossetti, Joanna Baillie, Sara Coleridge, George Eliot, and more. A thoughtful collection in a lovely binding.

Some rubbing to spine, toning to leaves. Bright.
