A early and scarce examination of the disco phenomenon by Billboard disco editor Radcliffe Joe, recording white, middle-class, establishment resistance to disco's rise and longtime resentment of its popularity: white radio stations shut out disco in early years "primarily because its history was rooted in still taboo sounds of black and Hispanic music," while "Gay support of and creative input into the disco sound now meant that it was no longer just ethnic [...] but gay as well."
