Lornell and Stephenson discuss go-go as a regional, cultural, and musical phenomenon, as well as examine the groundwork laid in the Black dance clubs and DC public school music programs of the early 1960s before the impact of funk and the full emergence of go-go as a recognizable and separate sub-genre. Music historians generally resist crediting the form with a single founder, but all agree that if it had one, it was Chuck Brown: "The time was ripe for experimentation and change, and Chuck Brown was there at the beginning of go-go."
