Mayr's original 1963 work was an "attempt to summarize and review critically what we know about the biology and genetics of animal species and evolution," which it did to great acclaim in twenty comprehensive chapters and over 800 pages. This shortened volume (Mayr explains) was produced in response to immediate and ongoing demand for a shorter and more manageable survey containing accessible information on all the same topics, but considerably less of it, with citations pruned and digressions curtailed. Though "no conscious effort" was made to incorporate all new research published in the interval between the volumes, many chapters were extensively revised and several of them largely rewritten. A solid and attractive copy with Mayr's uncommon inscription.
