O'Hanlon is known for his journeys to some of the most remote parts of the world, and has been hailed by Bill Bryson as being "probably the finest writer of travel books in the English language, and certainly the most daring." In this book, as in several of his others (See: NO MERCY, A JOURNEY TO THE HEART OF CONGO), Joseph Conrad was an inspiration to O'Hanlon. This journey in particular was further "framed by a knowledge of the great Borneo naturalists of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Alfred Russel Wallace, Charles Hose and William McDougall, and Robert Shelford."
