This set, featuring beautiful woodcut engravings of Richard Westall's illustrations (Westall was Queen Victoria's own drawing master) includes Vol I and Vol II of PARADISE LOST and a third volume featuring PARADISE REGAINED and SAMSON AGONISTES — printed in 1816, 1821, and 1822 respectively — contemporarily bound as a set in 1823, as indicated on the spine of one book.
London: John Sharpe, 1816; 1821; 1822. Three volumes, 6.5'' x 4'' each. Contemporary maroon straight-grain morocco, blind stamped boarders, gilt ruling and ornamentation to front board and spine, raised bands, elaborately gilt-stamped spines. Gilt stamped turn-ins, all edges gilt. Russet brown coated endpapers. Illustrated with engraved titles pages and section titles. Bookplates to front pastedowns. Boards with some rubbing, gentle sunning to spines; Vol III: front hinge cracked but sound, small spot of soil at spine head. Gilt bright.
