McNickle was a half-Cree-Metis scholar and activist who grew up on a reservation and in boarding schools run by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. He is best known for his 1936 novel THE SURROUNDED which "remains the most widely read and studied American Indian work" of its period (Warrior, 22). From inside educational institutions, governmental policy, and societal prejudice, Fey and McNickle worked together to create a comprehensive report of the American Indian identity by examining the interactions of the culture with that of the United States government and its people. An important book on American history, quite hard to find with McNickle's signature.
