Published at a time when television would have been a sort of enigma to the average American, the primary goal of GETTING A JOB IN TELEVISION was comprehensiveness: "It spotlights every job available — from stage hand through technician to director and producer." Especially helpful since, as Southwell notes, "Many of you [...] have never seen television — you know nothing about it beyond what you've absorbed from publicity stories and in advertisements." The book also serves as a snapshot of postwar America: "From December 7, 1941, until August 9, 1945 [...] the words 'television' and 'postwar' meant exactly the same thing. Television was the supreme promise, the finest spoil of victory, the certain right of every one of us after our gallant efforts."
