"On certain occasions art can shake very ordinary spirits, and whole worlds can be revealed by its clumsiest interpreters."
In his essay-long "defense" of Flaubert's unfinished final work, Jorge Luis Borges asserts that Flaubert "was the author who forged the realist novel" but "also the first to shatter it." Indeed, many Victorian critics didn't know what to make of BOUVARD AND PÉCUCHET, a novel that less resembles the realism of MADAME BOVARY and instead seems to resonate more with modernist and postmodernist works by writers like Kafka, Beckett, and Calvino.
This copy includes a notice from the publishers imploring purchasers not to buy copies of the book at a discount. Bright pictorial cloth much nicer than often seen.
