First published from 1893 to 1906, Rhodes's magnum opus took over a decade to complete, providing a comprehensive narrative of the nation from 1850 to 1877. It was called by one contemporary "by far the most important historical work now appearing in the United States," the first rigorous history to be written in the generation after Reconstruction: "not until now have we had a comprehensive history of [the Civil War] that has been satisfactory" (THE WORLD'S WORK). A businessman turned historian, Rhodes found many admirers in his approach meant for a generation audience, including Woodrow Wilson and Theodore Roosevelt. A beautifully preserved library set.
