Alongside Gibbon's DECLINE AND FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE (1776-1789), Hume's HISTORY OF ENGLAND (first published 1754-62) was one of the most influential histories published during the English-language Enlightenment. Best known today as a philosopher, Hume's thinking on political economy, the law and human rights, and empiricism inform this vast project. A stately, polished library set in contemporary tree calf.

Eight 12mo volumes, 7'' x 4'' each. Full contemporary tree calf, black and green spine labels, spines elaborately stamped in gilt. Marbled endpapers. Engraved frontispiece portraits in each volume. Light wear to joint and extremities; overall quite clean.
