"ART CASH"

E.A.T was officially founded in 1967 by Robert Rauschenberg and Robert Whitman, together with engineers Billy Kluver and Fred Waldhauser, as a nonprofit organization dedicated to experimental collaboration between artists and engineers. The four had previously collaborated in 1966 on a series of performance evenings, with John Cage, Lucinda Childs, and other notables — and the group's activities were at their peak by the beginning of the 1970s. "Art Cash" was designed as currency to be purchased and used for gambling at a fundraiser for the group and was printed exclusively for this event (by the American Banknote Company, the same company that printed currency for many governments). They were available for a brief time in sets of one bill each, and never sold in large quantities or reprinted. Individual bills are uncommon and are scarce in groups, even incomplete as here.

The Object

[New York]: [Experiments in Art and Technology], [1971]. 2.75'' x 6''. Four (of six) artist-designed bills in irregular denominations of $1, $12, $24, and $88, designed by Warhol, Rauschenberg, Gormley, and Marisol respectively (lacking Whitman and Grooms). In original, intact paper bank label printed with "$100 MANUFACTURERS HANOVER TRUST." Crisp, sharp-cornered.

Expedited, overnight, as well as other carriers (UPS, Fed-Ex, etc.), may carry additional costs beyond quoted rates. All orders receive tracking information and a direct contact in case of any questions.
