EURIPIDES POETA TRAGICORUM PRINCEPS
"[A]n indispensable volume to a critical collector of the works of this fascinating Greek tragedian" — Thomas Frognall Dibdin
Among the greatest of the Ancient Greek playwrights of classical Athens, Euripides is one of only three tragedians (along with Aeschylus and Sophocles) for whom any complete plays survive. Scholar-printer Oporinus first printed selected excerpts from Euripides in 1559 (ARISTOLOGIA EURIPIDEA GRAECOLATINA), with this complete edition of the plays appearing shortly after in 1562 — significantly, marking the first complete Latin translation of the playwright's extant corpus to appear in print. While Oporinus is particularly well-known for his editions of classical texts and was famously jailed (and subsequently defended by Martin Luther) for printing the first Latin translation of the Quran, Oporinus is perhaps best-remembered as the printer of Andreas Vesalius's era-defining DE HUMANI CORPORIS FABRICA LIBRI SEPTEM (1543). A handsome copy of a significant edition.
