This "new" algebra textbook was first published in 1862 as a follow-up to Greenleaf's earlier success, PRACTICAL TREATISE ON ALGEBRA, which went through dozens of printings in less than a decade (if the author's preface can be taken at face value). Part of "Greenleaf's Series of Mathematics," it begins with an overview of definitions and notation, then moves onto fractions and simple equations, tacking quadratic equations near the end. A worn but charming copy.
Boston: Robert S. Davis & Co, 1864. 7.5'' x 4.75''. Original quarter glossy brown cloth, pebbled cloth boards, gilt-lettered and blind-ornamented spine. Marbled edges, brown coated endpapers. vi, 7-324 pages. Significant wear to spine, with some spots of cloth effaced to expose underlying boards. Shadows of previously adhered element to endpapers. Moderate toning and some foxing, mostly marginal, to text. Text block still tight.
