Italian artist Brunelleschi moved to fin-de-siècle Paris, where he worked as an artist, illustrator, and fashion designer. He designed sets and costumes for Folies Bergère in the 1920s (including for Josephine Baker), and for the Scala in Milan and the Roxy Theater in New York; according to Jane Merrill, "his style was opulent yet humorous and light" (152). Among his known specialties was 18th-century Venetian styles and "refined coloring," both on their best display in this work.
