The Stonewall uprising sits at the center of STONE BUTCH BLUES, a novel which won immediate acclaim for its defiance of boundaries and won the American Library Association Stonewall Book Award as well as a Lambda Award. Feinberg's sharp specificity gives the book its enduring power some thirty years later: the physicality of labor, the cruelty of political violence, the inescapable geography of Western New York state, and the oppression and pain imposed by restrictive and unchosen constructions of gender and sexuality. In author's notes to later editions, Feinberg wrote: "Context is everything in politics, and Stone Butch Blues is a highly political polemic, rooted in its era [...] The last chapter of this saga of struggle has not yet been written." Rare (and frequently misidentified) first edition of a contemporary classic.
