Heinlein's tale of the messianic Valentine Michael Smith, born on Mars, but returning to Earth to share his wisdom, went on to have an enormous influence even outside of SF circles, becoming something of a counterculture touchstone in its depiction of free love, communal living, and Eastern-inflected mysticism. STRANGER won the the 1962 Hugo Award and remains a central novel of the science-fiction canon, whose "cultural impact on an entire generation is [...] undeniable" (Anatomy of Wonder). A beautiful example of this classic.
