Eliot — who grew up in the house beside this school — returned to the Mary Institute in 1959 to help celebrate the school's centennial, giving four lectures during his visit. This copy was inscribed during that visit to one of the school's most beloved teachers, Michael Gerrard ("a student favorite" [Dillon 118]), who taught English. Appropriately, this copy is filled with Gerrard's engaged and intelligent annotations throughout. One of the more uncommon Eliot titles to find inscribed, a charming association.

Eliot / 11.xi.59." Some sunning to spine, extremities. Foxing to endpapers, minor toning internally. Penned name to front pastedown. Contemporary annotations and marginalia throughout in pencil. Overall, clean and sound.
