Ruthless, pithy, incisive, and funny, Holzer's aphorisms remain an iconic work of political and conceptual art. Created over a decade from 1978-1987, "Holzer began posting her Truisms as fliers pasted, guerrilla-style, on Downtown Manhattan lampposts and walls, right alongside the graffiti that, just at that time, Jean-Michel Basquiat was inscribing with spray-paint. Later Holzer turned to less ephemeral, more prestigious materials: theater marquees, bronze plaques affixed to buildings, even the electronic signs of Times Square" (McAllister and McHale, 429), as well as here in book form. A rather fragile production, TRUISMS is increasingly uncommon in this condition and with the poster. A beautiful copy of an important book.
