Founded in the Spring of 1873 by D. Banks McKenzie, E.G. Tileston and William Appleton Jr. "to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, procure employment, and help the fallen," Appleton was located in Needham, twelve miles from Boston, on the five-acre estate of the Oakland Institute. The home consisted of a large resident house, gymnasiums, and medical facilities "where worthy men, out of employment, might find food and shelter until situations could be procured for them, and where, especially, such as had been reduced in circumstances by indulgence in intoxicating drinks" (9). This book describes the operations of the home and charity, includes stories of those assisted, compiles data on those served, and pleas for further funds. The institution's work was widely praised and continued well into the 20th century. A second greatly revised and expanded edition of this book was published two years later; both a quite scarce. OCLC locates just over a dozen scattered holdings of this first edition, with almost half in Massachusetts. A well-preserved example/
