FACADES
"We would collect all these wonderful dresses in thrift shops and at street fairs. There is a picture of two 1860 taffeta dresses, pre–Civil War—we paid $20 apiece. No one wanted this stuff. A Courrèges I think was $2. The kids were into mixing up hippie stuff, and I was just crazed for all the high fashion."
An eight year collaboration between Cunningham and his Carengie Hall studio neighbor Sherman, FACADES gathers images of Cunningham's collection of vintage fashions as worn by Sherman and photographed in front of NYC buildings from the same era as the outfits. A selection from the series (which eventually grew to almost 2000 images and more than 500 pieces) was exhibited in 1977 the Fashion Institute of Technology. FACADES followed that exhibition the following year. Cunningham would famously go on DETAILS and eventually THE NEW YORK TIMES, and was profiled in the acclaimed 2010 documentary BILL CUNNINGHAM NEW YORK, but FACADES in many ways marks the beginning of the work for which he would become most famous and revered.
