"As a connoisseur of children's-book illustration and newspaper cartoons, Johnson often cited the name of the Caldecott honoree Wanda Gag, a genial children's-book illustrator from the 1920s through the '40s, whose fluid, declarative line was the very forebear of Johnson's style." — Robert Pincus-Witten
Johnson incorporated Gag into numerous works (in part he liked the palindromic quality of the name) and he named his own imaginary twin sister, "Wanda Johnson," after Gag. A lovely homage connecting two important artists bound by their sense of childlike playfulness.

Original penciled drawing featuring a central "Gag-ish" decorative element, with "WANDA / GAG / 1893-1946" written below, and signed by Johnson at the right. One edge rough from (presumably) removal from small notebook. A few faint creases and a small stain, not effecting image. Nicely mounted and floated in an archival frame.
