A solemn and uncommonly unified photo album of a trip, likely by an American Jewish family, to the Łódź Cemetary and surrounding areas.
Near fine.
Price: $950.00
"This plaque was laid in loving memory of my dear sister BLUMA, on 7 October 1980, who was shot dead by a German murderer without any reason in the ghetto Łódź, Poland."
The Jewish Cemetery in Łódź was established in the late 19th century and was soon the largest such cemetery in Europe. During WWII it was made part of the Łódź Ghetto and more than 45,000 victims of Nazi violence were interred at the site. This album focuses primarily on the cemetery itself, documenting memorial plaques ("In memory of all Kleinlehrer and Najman who were killed by the German beast in the Holocaust from 1939-1945"), headstones, monuments and the like, as well as Łódź itself. A few images capture two young brothers, but otherwise the images are largely unpeopled, taken on an almost monochromatic film stock. A stark and moving document.
