"I hold it true, whate'er befall; / I feel it when I sorrow most; / 'Tis better to have loved and lost / Than never to have loved at all."
Tennyson was "The People's Poet," popularly beloved by Victorians in a way it is difficult to imagine a contemporary poet being admired today. The largest volume here is Tennyson's early poems, first published in 1830; the set also includes the acclaimed IN MEMORIUM (first published 1850). A handsome collection, bound by Victorian binders out of Manchester, Palmer & Howe.
London: Edward Moxon & Co, 1867. Five volumes, 6.25'' x 4'' each. Original full green goatskin bindings by Palmer & Howe, gilt rules and cornerpieces, raised bands, gilt-stamped spines. All edges gilt, gilt-ruled turn-ins, light yellow coated endpapers. Green ribbon markers. olumes range between 170 and 380 pages. Binder tickets to rear pastedowns; a few small pencil notations to endpapers. Light rubbing to extremities of boards.
