A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS
"Even my dog has gone commercial."
Companion book to the beloved Bill Melendez-directed Christmas special, with an original Snoopy doodle by Schulz. The Emmy- and Peabody-winning A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS marked the first ever on-screen appearance of Shulz's loveable yet existentially tormented self-insert, his charismatic dog, and their colorful crew of friends. Now as much a part of the fabric of the American Christmas tradition as George Bailey and The Grinch, it's difficult to imagine just how much of a risk the project was in 1965. Every element — from the decision to use untrained children as voice actors, the absence of a laugh track, and the now iconic Guairaldi jazz soundtrack, to the climax of the film (Linus's speech on the Biblical origins of Christmas) — faced pushback. "When CBS finally saw the finished product, they were sure it was doomed" (NY MAG), but critics loved it: "The reviews were outstanding. WASHINGTON POST TV critic Lawrence Laurent wrote, 'Good old Charlie Brown, a natural born loser [...] finally turned up a winner'" (ibid). A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS became an instant classic, airing on broadcast television every single year for 56 years, until 2020, when it became exclusively available on the subscription service Apple+ — proving, perhaps, Charlie Brown's desperate query: "Isn't there anyone who knows what Christmas is all about?"
