The classic photobook focused on a group of formerly enslaved people and their descendants living on the plantation owned by Peterkin's husband. ROLL, JORDAN, ROLL's title originates from an popular eighteenth-century spiritual taken up by enslaved communities in the south as a secret message of escape. Ulmann was a student of photographer Clarence White (1871–1925), her indelible "soft-focus photos — rendered as tactile as charcoal drawings in the superb gravure reproductions here — straddle Pictorialism and Modernism" (Roth). Peterkin's text, an ethnographic study of the Gullah people and the religious life of their community, is "partly narrative, partly didactic" (Roth), but when she won the 1929 Pulitzer Prize for her novel SCARLETT SISTER MARY, W.E.B. Du Bois wrote of her: "Peterkin is a southern white woman, but she has the eye and the ear to see beauty and know truth."
