"The great hero myth of Texas," LONESOME DOVE is deceptively simple: two aging Texas rangers set out to be the first cattlemen in Montana, driving their herd across the country from the Rio Grande (Spong). The sweeping narrative develops the deep friendship of the rangers-turned-cattlemen Gus and Call as they cross America in the closing days of the Old West. The landscape is populated with "dozens of characters to fall in love with or detest"; Larry McMurtry related that he wanted the book to be "the GONE WITH THE WIND of the West," with the interplay of characters driving the development of the plot (Spong).
LONESOME DOVE netted McMurtry the 1986 Pulitzer Prize for fiction; it was also adapted into a miniseries starring Robert Duvall Tommy Lee Jones. Critics further have drawn parallels with the works of Charles Dickens, noting LONESOME DOVE "crush[ed] the distinction between high literature and popular fiction."
