Ingrid Pitt, the star of THE VAMPIRE LOVERS, developed a cult following for her work on this film and the following year's COUNTESS DRACULA (1971). Born in Poland, at age 5 she was interned in a concentration camp; she escaped with her mother into the woods where they had been taken to be shot. Pitt remarked of her childhood, "I was born into the biggest horror show of the century, the brutalities of the Nazi regime" (Guardian).
The lesbian-coded eroticism of VAMPIRE LOVERS drew the attention of censor John Trevelyan, who "read the submitted script before production and warned the studio" that some of its content might require excising; "Hammer very politely replied that the lesbianism was not of their doing, but that of CARMILLA's author Sheridan Le Fanu, and that it was all there to be seen on the page. [...] In rehearsals, Pitt recalls, her fangs repeatedly fell down the cleavage of victim Kate O'Mara. A scene that Le Fanu inexplicably failed to get down on paper" (McKay, 189-190).
