A remarkable association. Neil Sheehan was instrumental in obtaining and reporting on the Pentagon Papers for the NEW YORK TIMES, and it was Graham who ultimately published the papers themselves in the POST. Sheehan would go on to win a Pulitzer for his 1988 book A BRIGHT SHINING LIE about the Vietnam War, inspired and informed in part on his reporting on the Pentagon Papers. His wife, Susan Sheehan, longtime staff writer for THE NEW YORKER, also won a Pulitzer in 1983 for her book IS THERE NO PLACE ON EARTH OF ME?
This copy, which belonged to the Sheehans, includes two letters from Graham loosely laid in. The first, a brief handwritten note dated April 19th [1998], thanks the couple for their "generous thought of Godiva chocolates for the Pulitzer Prize." The second, a longer typewritten letter dated April 29th 1999, expresses how "pleased and flattered" Graham was at discovering that Susan "actually taught my book in your reading and writing class."
A wonderful and important association between these three Pulitzer winners and titans of journalism.

Original unclipped ($29.95) black-and-white pictorial dust jacket designed by Carol Devine Carson. Fore-edge machine deckle. Illustrated in black and white. [2], x, 644 pages, including index. Loosely laid in are two signed ("Kay") letters from Graham in their original postmarked envelopes. The first (addressed to both, about 30 words) entirely in Graham's hand and on her personal stationery. The second (addressed to Susan, about 100 words) typed (i.e. laser printed) on her official POST letterhead. Both folded for mailing; envelopes cleanly opened. Else fine. Book has mild shelfwear, faint toning here and there. Overall, sound and clean.
