The unexpected success of Tolkien's LORD OF THE RINGS after it was issued in paperback in the US (1965) encouraged publishers to experiment with ways to capitalize on its momentum. First they looked for other classic fantasies they hoped were sleepers ready for bestseller status (e.g. Ballantine's Adult Fantasy Series) — but soon they sought new, original works on the Tolkien model. It was this latter strategy that ultimately shaped modern epic fantasy: "the major turning point in fantasy's final vault to bestseller-genre status occurred in 1977 and 1978, with the first publications of Terry Brooks and Stephen R. Donaldson" (Williamson, 196). Terry Brooks's SWORD OF SHANNARA was a patently obvious replication of Tolkien's LORD OF THE RINGS (much as we love it, we cannot deny this); Donaldson's CHRONICLES OF THOMAS COVENANT, still based on the Tolkien model, nevertheless brought fresh, original ideas to the framework. "These bestselling works [...] stand as the direct prototypes of the later expansive 'epic' fantasies by authors from David Eddings to [Robert] Jordan and Steve Erikson" (ibid,197). An exceptionally fresh set.
