"To me it seems rather Christlike to be as unadorned as this place is, as little reguarded... This whole town does look like whatever hope becomes after it begins to weary a little, then weary a little more."
Written in the form of a letter from father to son, GILEAD recounts the struggles of the Ames family to reconcile their Christian faith with their methods of opposition to the institution of slavery. Former US president Barack Obama counts it as one of his favorite novels; he notes that the "gracious and courtly and a little bit confused" narrator Reverend John Ames is "one of [his] favorite characters in fiction" (NEW YORK REVIEW). A beautiful copy.
