"When your rage is choking you, it is best to say nothing."
A first-person narrative told from the perspective of Shori, an amnesiac vampire, Butler's monsters — here called Ina — are a separate species from human's entirely and Shori learns that she has been genetically engineered to have extra melanin so as to be less vulnerable to the sun. By Butler's own description she is "the first black vampire because of her people's desire for a 24-hour day" (DemocracyNow). A unique take on the genre, that, like Butler's other works, has found itself increasingly revisited and reexamined for its prescience.
