Rare Book School: Identifying and Understanding 20th Century Duplicating Technologies

Sunday, Jun 11, 2023 - Friday, Jun 16, 2023

Co-founder Brian Cassidy returns to Rare Book School this summer to teach the history and identification of twentieth-century duplicating processes. Topics covered include the nineteenth-century origins of duplication, common duplicating processes like spirit, mimeography, xerography, and offset—as well as more unusual methods like verifax, electrofax, and Ozalid—through modern technologies such as ink jet and Risograph. While the focus of the course is primarily on the proper identification of these processes, the class will also discuss their bibliographic implications, conservation and preservation concerns, and the challenges posed by fakes, forgeries, and regenerations. A full course description is available here.
