"To have only wicked men and devils for company — how awful! This sad end need not be yours."
Surprisingly scarce early US edition of Hadley's adaptations of stories from the Old and New Testaments, improved and fortified with added piety for the edification of young children. Received with some displeasure in its own day for its presumption; a contemporary review in Arthur's Illustrated Home Magazine disapproves of the author's rearrangements: "We do not think it good to paraphrase the Bible, or to attempt to clothe its histories in other language." On the other hand, if Hadley's version is not an improvement on the poetic language of the King James version, it is at least substantially shorter.
