Bruno Pasquier-Desvignes defies classification. THE NEW YORK TIMES calls him "part tinkerer and part storyteller, a cross between Alexander Calder and Jean Tinguely;" filmmaker James Ivory compares him to Picasso, noting his ability to "pick up any old thing lying around, see its possibilities for transformation and then turn it into a new and enchanting thing" (RURAL INTELLIGENCE). Pasquier-Desvignes's book sculptures highlight his ingenuity, creativity, and humor, as he toys with the idea of a codex as a container.
This 1973 copy of THE STATESMAN'S YEAR-BOOK lends a certain weight to Pasquier-Desvignes's selection of clippings and his ominous metal figure, which stabs an image of the earth with its sharp appendages. Created during the Iran-Iraq war and during the Iran-Contra deals, Pasquier-Desvignes used this sculpture to express his uncertainty about the state of the world.
