Bertrice Small (1937-2015) was one of the bestselling romance writers who revolutionized the genre beginning in the 1970s with sexually explicit historical romances played out on epic scales. Along with (most notably) Kathleen Woodiwiss, Rosemary Rogers, Laurie McBain, Jude Deveraux, and Johanna Lindsay, Small became part of the legendary "Avon Ladies," the small stable of authors whom the visionary editor Nancy Coffey brought to print, selling millions of copies. These books, known as "bodice rippers," foregrounded sexual experiences from a woman's point of view. Small was one of the genre's biggest names for decades, gaining nearly every conceivable honor in the field of romance: besides regularly charting on the bestseller lists of THE NEW YORK TIMES, USA TODAY, and PUBLISHERS WEEKLY, she was awarded RWA's Lifetime Achievement Award and ROMANTIC TIMES' Career Achievement Award for Historical Romance. She was known for her extensive historical research, jaw-dropping plots across vast canvases of time and place, and a luscious prose style all her own.
