Memoir was one of the earliest literary forms explored by Asian American writers in the late 19th century. However, it would take another generation for the publication of a memoir by a Japanese American woman: first, A DAUGHTER OF THE SAMURAI (1925) was published by Estu Sugimoto, a Japanese-born woman who emigrated to the United States through an arranged marriage; this memoir followed sooner after by Tamagawa, who was born in the United States to a Japanese father and an Irish-American mother. The story takes readers from her childhood in Chicago, to her teen years in Yokohama, and finally her adulthood in New York.
