The improbably named Dr. Comfort helped to de-stigmatize sex not only for the adults of the 1970s and '80s, but unintentionally their children as well, who secreted this book from shelves, drawers, and closets of innumerable shag-carpeted rooms to study "the book's once-notoriously explicit charcoal illustrations" (John McAlley). Though JOY has gone on to sell millions of copies across numerous editions, the first remains elusive.
