VOODOO IN NEW ORLEANS
"Sometimes a white man in New Orleans takes a walk along South Rampart Street, one of the famous Negro thoroughfares of America. He turns at Canal Street, the city's most important business street, and immediately he finds himself in a new world, with its own particular sights and sounds and smells."
A "fascinating and provocative" investigation into New Orleans Voodoo, including a history of "famous Voodoo queens and witch doctors" and "orgies and ceremonies of the cult," zooming in on the stories of iconic New Orleans figures: Voodoo practitioner Marie Laveau and her daughter, Marie Laveau II. Before achieving prominence in the 1940s and '50s with numerous novels and non-fiction titles on subjects of local interest, New Orleans author Robert Tallant worked as an editor for the WPA Writer's Project in Louisiana. His research for VOODOO IN NEW ORLEANS was undertaken "over a period of many years" and included "conversations with Negroes and white persons" along with the observation of "every type of Voodoo ceremony extant in Louisiana, even the most secret." Tallant's engrossing portrayal of the practice, though entertaining, has been met with a fair amount of criticism. Zora Neale Hurston, who reviewed the book for THE JOURNAL OF AMERICAN FOLKLORE, warned: "The historical background is not to be trusted[.]" Scarce.
