While taking a break from the Oz series, Baum decided to explore fiction for "young folk 12 to 18" with his first non-fantasy novel published under his own name (rather than a pseudonym), THE DARING TWINS (1911). This is the 2nd and final book of Baum's ultimately short-lived series, seeking to capture "the real life of real boys and girls" (Reilly & Britton, quoted in Bienvenue). Sister Phoebe gets top billing in this book, an important consideration in the overall goal of the series to appeal to girls as much as to boys.
