Stockton was an American novelist best known for his humorous writing and children's fairy tales. His tales gained popularity in part by avoiding much of the moralizing common to the tales of this period. In the 20th century, Maurice Sendak would return to some of his tales, creating illustrated editions for a new generation.
New York: Scribner, Armstrong & Co., (1872). 8.5'' x 6.5''. Original purple pebbled cloth, elaborately stamped in gilt and black to front board and spine, blind stamped rear board. Yellow endpapers. Illustrated throughout in black and white. [2], 371, [1] pages. Ink gift inscription dated 1872 to front free endpaper. Toning to spine and a touch to margins, with shallow chipping to spine ends. Light spotting to endpapers and text block edges. Hinges firm.
