Haley first met Malcolm X as a journalist, earning the man's trust by publishing articles on the Nation of Islam in an objective tone just as Haley had promised he would. Haley was asked by Grove to see if he could get Malcolm X to agree to an autobiography, written by Haley but based exclusively upon hours of interviews between him and Malcolm X; Haley essentially functioned as a named ghostwriter. While arranging the publishing agreement, Malcolm X asked Haley to agree to another contract just between themselves: "Nothing can be in this book's manuscript that I didn't say, and nothing can be left out that I want in it." Haley's epilogue details their relationship and an account of Malcolm X's assassination, which occurred only months before the book's publication. Adapted in to the widely admired Oscar-nominated Spike Lee film starring Denzel Washington, an increasingly scarce title.
