Mispackaged gothic romance — with the Prestige Books cover for Jennifer Hale's work accidentally fitted to copies of Meg Padget's work of the same name and year.

This copy represents one of the infamous stories from the history of the gothic romances fad of the 1960s and early '70s. When two gothics with the same title were published in the same year (1965), the printer (used by both publishers) accidentally mixed the two up, placing the cover meant for Jennifer Hale's novel over the text block of Meg Padget's novel. Jennifer Hale's work did receive a proper printing in 1972 — with the original wrapper intended for its 1965 printing, this time properly matched with Hale's text.
The mistaken 1965 printing of Padget's book (issued by Lancer) in Hale's wrapper (issued by Prestige/Magnum) has Padget's name on the title page, but the Prestige Books imprint; it also has a "Magnum Classics" ad at the rear. (Padget's proper Lancer printing has the Lancer imprint on the title and a Lancer ad at the rear, as well as a short ad graph underneath the last line of text, lacking in the mistaken Prestige printing.) A fascinating study of postwar paperback printing.
