TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT began as three short stories about struggling fisherman Harry Morgan, two of which had previously been published in magazines. One of his more politically charged novels, Hemingway was at the time of its writing working as a journalist reporting on the Spanish Civil War. Writes biographer Kenneth S Lynn: "From his reports from the front and his other activities in behalf of the Loyalist cause, as well as from his preachment of social solidarity in a new novel, TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT, he would emerge in the eyes of the world as a man of strong leftist sympathies" (442). Twice adapted into film, most famously in 1944 with Bogey and Bacall, directed by Howard Hawks, and co-written by William Faulkner.
